We call our
healthcare community WindberCare – a name that stands for
excellence in clinical standards, complementary therapies,
promotion of healthy lifestyles, and (through affiliation with
WRI) research. It’s a name that means innovation, best practices
wherever they can be found, and the caring tradition we expect
of the healthcare institution that has always carried the name
of Windber.
Seldom has an
institution of such modest size offered such diverse,
high-quality care or drawn such attention. WindberCare has
facilities and services you just can’t find in other community
hospitals of its size elsewhere in America.
WindberCare’s
legacy of innovative and qualitative patient-care has been made
possible by far-sighted leadership, the dedicated support and
hard work of exceptional employees, resolute regional leaders,
loyal patients and their families.

The 2008 Spirit of Planetree
Awards
Windber Medical Center was honored with
four award recipients this year at the 30th Annual
Conference held in Chicago this year. The awards categories were
the Caregiver Award, the Physician Champion Award, Program Award
and Animal Therapy Award.
The Spirit of Planetree Awards were created
to promote patient-centered care by publicly recognizing
individuals who personalize and demystify the healthcare
experience for others as well as programs and services that
support extraordinary achievement in patient-centered care.
The initiative helps communicate the
character and quality of the caregivers and healthcare
organizations serving the community in the Planetree network.
The Awards positively impact staff morale
in affiliated institutions through an award process that
includes and reflects appreciation by peers and administrators
and, in many cases, recognizes those who have not been in the
spotlight for professional achievements.

WINDBER — As friends and neighbors,
Theresa Will and Janet Weis have shared
life’s joys and sorrows for almost 50
years.
They both looked back with joy on one of
their shared sorrows Monday, joining
Joyce Murtha Breast Care Center’s
Pathways to Discoveries program honoring
the community and breast cancer
survivors.
Weis is a 36-year survivor, and Will is
a 21-year survivor.
“When we had our cancer, life was very
different, and so was the hospital, and
so was medicine,” Will said. “I’m
thrilled and honored to have this place
here in our community.”
The friends were among about 250 people
who braved cold, biting winds to take
part in the candlelight celebration in a
partially-heated tent outside the breast
care center.
U.S. Rep. John Murtha, D-Johnstown, and
his wife, Joyce, also spoke.
“This is the really gratifying part of
my business: When you can do something
that really has an impact on people,”
John Murtha said. “I’m so proud of all
of you for what you’ve gone through.”
“I am proud to be an advocate for all of
you wonderful and courageous breast
cancer survivors,” Joyce Murtha said.
The evening concluded with the reading
of more than 300 names of cancer
survivors and those who died.
Cancer patients talk about
surviving

WINDBER - Looking around the room and seeing the cancer
survivors and their supporters, Wendy Spencer thought at first
how wonderful to see so many who were all in the same club.
After giving it some thought, she said, “It’s really not such a
great club to be in as each and every one of you know. But we
are here tonight and that is the important thing.”
Spencer, a cancer survivor, was the guest speaker at the Pathway
to Discoveries event, held at the Joyce Murtha Breast Care
Center, last Monday in Windber. She said she was honored to be
the guest speaker because it’s an event “honoring our
survivorship. We’re all here today to celebrate our victories
and our triumphs, but not to dwell on our trials and
tribulations that come along with having breast cancer.”

Windber Medical Center Announces Campaign Fund Drive
Windber Medical
Center publicly announced their capital campaign drive to expand
the emergency service department and the obstetrics department.
Windber has received an overflow of patients needing and
requesting their services. We want to be able to accommodate the
patients that choose Windber; therefore we have begun our fund
drive which has been supported by our Board of Directors, our
own employees, and various leaders in the region. Our campaign
chairperson, Attorney Tim Leventry, has done a great job leading
us in the right direction.
“We started
this campaign with a silent phase of which we have already
raised $2 million, and are still going strong,” Attorney
Leventry said. “We are now asking for support from the region
and community to keep our efforts at the highest level. We have
a goal of $3 million and are constantly working to reach that
goal.”
F. Nicholas
Jacobs, President and CEO of Windber Medical Center said that
expansions in the emergency room will need to double because
patient services have surged to over 15,000. In the obstetrics
department the design is to create more labor and delivery rooms
as Windber is expecting about 300 births this year, which is
about a 42% increase over the past year and a 56% increase over
the previous year.
